5 Running Shoes Similar To Saucony Guide (with Reviews)

1. New Balance Fresh Foam 860 v11

New Balance Women's Fresh Foam 860v11, Light Blue, 8.5 Medium

For those who love a mix of cushion, stability, and a wide toe box, then the New Balance Fresh Foam 860 v11 is going to be a shoe to seriously consider.

The 860v11 is topped off with an Engineered Mesh upper you’re going to have a secure and comfortable fit with flexible support. New Balance is known for having a wide toe box, so wide feet can rejoice in the space!

Similar to Saucony, It has a sturdy heel counter and the top features an ultra heel to reduce achilles irritation by reducing rubbing. We have been seeing this a lot with many brands on the market (and it’s amazing it’s taken them all so long to get to this point).

As someone with this trouble from time to time, I really appreciated the effort in trying to reduce achilles rubbing.

Although the New Balance Fresh Foam is known to deliver plush cushioning for those who want a soft underfoot feel, it feels a little stiff in this model.

This is not a bad thing though because there is still plenty of cushion, but if you want something “plush” or “luxurious” then you’re better off going for Brooks or Hoka.

For extra support you will have a medial post, which consists of higher density foam on the medial side of the shoe that works to correct overpronation. It is reliable and adds plenty of stability to your gait cycle. This also helps with flat feet runners as it provide the support in areas where it is needed.

Finally, the Blown Rubber outsole is pretty durable and provides good grip and a superior rebound off of the ground.

2. Brooks Adrenaline GTS 21

Brooks Men's Adrenaline GTS 21 Running Shoe - Grey/Tradewinds/Deep Cobalt - 7

The Brooks Adrenaline GTS 21 may be one of the most loved stability shoes on the market. It combines support and comfort in a traditional package masterfully.

Brooks used an Engineered mesh to construct the upper, which provides solid lightweight structure and breathability. An updated 3D Fit Print design to provides further structure and support around your foot. This aids on the overall stability in your stride.

To add further stability there is a Heel Counter that is updated to create a more comfortable and secure heel fit.

All the goodness of this shoe starts with the DNA Loft foam comprising much of the midsole. It is not crazy springy or plush, but it finds a wonderful combination between the two for a satisfying ride.

To add further comfort Brooks also implements a BioMoGo DNA, which rewards you for running more and more in this shoe, as the foam will slowly form to your individual foot shape.

For greater support Brooks implements its Guide Rails technology for a holistic support system that pretty much works as a traditional posting, except instead of being a blunt force that stops your foot, it nudges it in the correct direction. This is far more comfortable, and it allows neutral runners to enjoy this shoe as well.

I have a pair of Adrenaline and they have help alleviate some of the pain that is caused by plantar fasciitis.

Brooks includes some Omega Flex Grooves throughout  the shoe to optimize forefoot flexibility without compromising cushioning, as well as a segmented crash pad that flexes with the foot for a better transition.

Finally, a blown rubber outsole covers much of the bottom of the shoe, which helps with versatile traction and durability.

We wrote an entire review on the Adrenaline that you can find right here

Brooks Men's Adrenaline GTS 21 Running Shoe - Blackened Pearl/Black/Grey - 7

This Brooks Adrenaline GTS 21 is a certified PDAC A5500 Diabetic shoe and has been granted the APMA Seal of Acceptance.

Pros

  • Comfortable upper
  • Outstanding support

Cons

  • Forefoot cushion feels stiff.

3. Asics Gel-Kayano 27

ASICS Men's Gel-Kayano 27 Running Shoes, 12, Black/Pure Silver

Similar to the Adrenaline, the Gel-Kayano is a very popular shoe and a solid alternative to the Saucony Guide.

Probably offering the most stability of all the shoes on this list, the Asics Gel-Kayano 27 is beefed out with pronation control, but also manages to offer plenty of cushion as well. Let’s explore its features.

With many shoe models on the market today, the upper is made up from Asics’ Engineered mesh, which is fairly breathable and maintains some foot structure and lockdown around the ankle and midfoot. The toe box is also fairly wide as well, so most feet should enjoy it.

The lockdown in the heel is enhanced by the External Heel Clutch, which is an exoskeletal structure that wraps the heel for a secure fit, on top of that there is an X-shaped structure lined with memory foam for a personalized fit. The instep will feel quite comfortable as will because the EVA Sockliner provides added cushioning.

The midsole is made soft from the Flytefoam, provides lightweight and durable cushioning that is also environmentally friendly. On top of that we see some Flytefoam Propel built right underneath the sockliner for a softer step-in.

It wouldn’t be Ascics if we didn’t see some sort of Rearfoot and Forefoot Gel cushioning. They are placed in both the front and back of the Kayano for an added comfort.

As far as the stability system is concerned, it starts with the Dynamic DuoMax Support System, which reduces overpronation by controlling the movement of the foot, leading to a smoother heel to toe transition. This combines with a Space Trusstic to provide further stability and structural integrity.

Finally, an Impact Guidance System (IGS) supposedly creates a smoother transition from heel to toe. With so much else going on I did not really feel this feature.

Pros

  • Stable Ride
  • Soft

Cons

  • Feels Quite Bulky

4. HOKA ONE ONE Arahi 4

HOKA ONE ONE Men's Arahi 4 Running Shoes, Nimbus Cloud/Anthracite, 8.5 US

HOKA One One is an extremely popular brand nowadays and is known for its maximalist take on  midsole foams and geometric rocker material for a forward rolling sensation.

The Hoka One One Arahi 4 is the premier stability trainer for this Hoka, but it's surprisingly breathable and lightweight.

For such good stability and ride, there really isn’t a ton going on here in regards to features. Hoka uses its EVA J-frame technology to enhance stability and support throughout the heel-to-toe off.

This is combined with its Early Stage Meta-Rocker Geometry to guide your foot to a neutral positioning without getting in your way.

To max out the lockdown, comfort, and breathability, Hoka uses its engineered upper mesh to allow airflow in and out of the shoe for sufficient breathability.

Hoka also includes a nicely padded tongue for greater comfort on the top of the foot and a Molded Ortholite Sockliner to assist with odor management while also providing additional underfoot cushioning.

Pros

  • EVA J-Frame Tech
  • Soft EVA Midsole Foam
  • Lightweight

Cons

  • May have prolonged break-in period
  • Narrow Toe Box

5. HOKA ONE ONE Gaviota 2

HOKA ONE ONE Women's Gaviota 2 Running Shoe, Grape Juice / Bright Marigold, 6

The second Hoka on the list, the Hoka One One Gaviota 2 provides superb arch support with a wide platform and impressive geometric rocker.

An engineered mesh upper stays lightweight and allows for some nice breathability. To accompany this mesh Hoka implements arch-lock wings to provide necessary structure around the midfoot.

To keep things comfortable on the inside there is a molded Ortholite sockliner to provide further underfoot cushioning. It’s a little stiff for the first couple of miles, but after that I felt it sink in and mold to my feet.

HOKA ONE ONE Women's Gaviota 2 Running Shoe, Grape Juice / Bright Marigold, 6

Making up the bulk of the shoe is the signature thick midsole. On the Gaviota 2, you’re getting excellent stability from the RMAT J-Frame, which provides dynamic stability by placing RMAT along the medial side of the shoe and around the heel to guide the foot naturally without using a standard medial post.

Put simply, RMAT is HOKA's blend of rubber and EVA foam for durable, responsive cushioning.

As usual with Hoka, this shoe features a Late Stage Meta-Rocker Geometry, which is a rockered midsole design engineered to create a stable base of forefoot support. Finishing off with the outsole, there is a Hi-Abrasion Lightweight Rubber strategically placed for increased traction and durability.

Pros

  • Lightweight upper mesh
  • J-Frame inherent stability
  • Great for runner with bigger frames

Cons

  • Heavy
  • Narrow Toe Box

5 Running Shoes Similar To Saucony Guide - Wrap Up

If you need running shoes similar to the Saucony Guide 14, you want one that offers a great combination over the medial support and cushioning.

The Brooks Adrenaline GTS 21 and HOKA One One Arahi 4 both provide some awesome support and cushion that are most comparable to Saucony Ride 14.

Overall you’re probably looking for a shoe with lots of medial support, so make sure you get a shoe that provides the stability you’ll need!

I will always recommend searching around for sales and deals on these shoes, some are pretty new models, but you definitely have an opportunity to find these for cheaper.
