Brooks Dyad vs. Brooks Ghost

This article gives information on these two shoes, pros/cons, and compare and contrast between the two - Brooks Ghost vs Dyad.

The Brooks Ghost has evolved over the years to become one of the premier reliable neutral daily trainers on the market.

Brooks Women's Ghost 13 Running Shoe - Grey/Atlantis/Black - 10.5

The Ghost proves to be one of the most popular running shoes every year because of its soft landing, smooth transition, and tenacious durability in the midsole and outsole.

Seeking to grow upon the positives of the previous versions, the Ghost 13 builds off of the Ghost 12 but offers an even softer landing with increased amounts of the Brooks DNA LOFT midsole foam. This increased level of midsole foam is also found in the Levitate shoes

This contributes to a soft, yet more springy toe-off compared to previous versions.

This midsole design also comes with a Segmented Crash Pad, which offers customizable cushioning stability through the heel-to-toe off cycle.

This Crash Pad also pairs with Omega Flex Grooves, which are implemented to offer forefoot flexibility without compromising cushioning in that area. This will offer greater mobility to complement your springy toe-off.

Continuing to surpass its predecessors, the Ghost 13 implements a Two-Color Knitted Upper to deliver an even softer instep feel that holds your foot into the shoe well without any excessive tightness around the top of the foot.

This revamped upper also comes with a reimagined heel counter to provide a more supportive heel fit.

Let’s take a closer look at the specs of the Ghost 13 (full review).

Designed to provide sure-footed stability for medium and flat-arched runners, the Brooks Dyad 11 has made some tweaks compared to its predecessors in order to provide a more accommodating comfort and ride.

Brooks Women's Dyad 11 Running Shoe - Blue/Navy/Beetroot - 9.5 Medium

Although not the most popular running shoe of the Brooks lineup, the Dyad 11 has proven effective for those needing its extra lateral stability.

Improving from older models, the Brooks Dyad 11 sports a completely new upper that is softer and more accommodating to those with a wider foot or custom orthotics.

The upper starts with the tried and true Brooks Engineered upper mesh, which is placed in the forefoot to provide breathability and a more adaptable fit.

Next Brooks placed an Internal Support Saddle across the midfoot in order to provide a secure lockdown around the top of your foot. Finally, with the Brooks Cushole S-257 Last and Ultimate Sockliner, the interior of the upper feels plush and seamless.

The midsole is where the Dyad 11 really stands out, with the Brooks BioMoGo DNA foam, which is a fusion of BioMoGo midsole and DNA cushioning technology for a fully custom responsive ride.

Brooks also implemented a Heel Segmented Crash Pad that flexes with the foot to offer a customized cushioning and stability for a smooth heel-to-toe transition. The Omega Flex Grooves should also enhance midsole flexibility without compromising cushioning.

Besides the HPR Plus and Blown rubber in the outsole, there is also a Dual Stability Arch Pod positioned at the bottom of the midfoot to offer additional stability for the arch.

These Arch Pods create inherent stability for the shoe that shouldn’t interfere with a neutral gait cycle.

Full Evaluation - Ghost 13 vs Dyad 11:

Uppers: Ghost 13 vs Dyad 11:

The uppers on these shoes have a fairly similar design, they are just implemented differently.

Brooks Women's Ghost 13 Running Shoe - Grey/Atlantis/Black - 10.5

The Brooks Ghost 13’s two-color knit upper provides a more snug fit that will hold your foot close and will probably feel a little more narrow in the toe box. The Dyad 11 will provide a more adaptable fit for someone with wider or larger feet.

The lacing system is comparable between the two models, both the Ghost 13 and the Dyad 11 have plush laces that should lock your foot down comfortably.

The Brooks Ghost 13 and Dyad 11 will have plush heel cups and a sturdy heel counter to better guide you through the heel-to-toe off. However, the tongue on the Ghost 13 will feel plusher than on the Dyad 11.

Both shoes will provide a secure fit, but the Dyad 11 is created with wider and flatter feet in mind, so that will be where its upper excels compared to the Ghost 13.

Sole Unit: Ghost 13 vs Dyad 11:

The sole units have some key differences that are worth exploring in terms of build design and intentions.

The Brooks Ghost 13 is designed to provide a seamless transition from heel-to-toe off while providing some general support for a neutral runner.

Brooks Women's Ghost 13 Running Shoe - Grey/Atlantis/Black - 10.5

It will provide a stronger combination of a plush landing with a springy toe-off. That DNA LOFT Midsole means business!

The Dyad 11 will provide a more intentional inherent stability for those who may have flatter feet or some minor ankle instability.

The Dual Stability Arch Pods will have you feeling secure with some lateral stability. It will not feel as plush or soft as the Ghost 13, but the BioMoGo DNA will have you feeling pretty good anyway.

The outsoles will provide similar durability, but you will probably feel better traction in the Ghost 13’s blown rubber outsole compared to the Dyad 11’s HBR Plus and blown rubber combination, as it just does not feel quite right in some places.

The Ghost 13 will provide a better comprehensive ride and comfort for your daily training and long runs, but if you need extra lateral stability and a roomier fit to accommodate your flat feet or custom orthotics then the Dyad 11 may be your better choice.

Brooks Dyad vs. Brooks Ghost Verdict

The Ghost 13 emerges as the better “all-around” daily trainer, as its comfortable upper design pairs well with its plush yet springy transition in the midsole. This just feels like a shoe that would work better for more runners out there.

That is not to say that the Dyad 11 does not have its place at the top. For those with flat or wide feet will probably feel comfortable in the more roomy toe box fit. This would apply to those who need more room in a shoe for custom orthotics as well.

Both shoes are priced similarly, and they will probably both provide similar durability and value. Probably an estimated 400-600 mile range for both shoes depending on how economic your gait cycle is.

Again, if you are a neutral runner that doesn’t need any extra accommodations, then the Ghost 13 will probably be the better choice, but if you need some more space for your feet, then settling for the Dyad 11 is probably your better bet.

In the end, it comes down to the accommodations you may need to fit your activity style. Both the Brooks Ghost 13 and Dyad 11 can be solid “do it all” shoes in terms of daily training.

The differences will come depending on the amount of room you need in the toe box and lateral stability you may require. If that sounds like something you often take into account, then go for the Dyad 11.

If the shoe you desire is a standard and reliable trainer with some plush cushioning and a snugger fit, then the Ghost 13 will probably be the one for you.
