Brooks Adrenaline vs. Beast

With their “Run Happy” motto, Brooks has one mission, to build great running gear that makes every run better than the last.

Brooks is moving away from the stability criteria it used to distinguish its shoes and embracing “running experiences” as a new parameter, instead. For the last 4+ years, they’ve been more focused on cushioning, knee support, and responsiveness.

Today, we’ll be comparing two of Brooks’ superstars, the crowd's favorite Adrenaline vs. Beast.

The biggest difference is that the Brooks Beast provides additional midsole support and cushioning designed for runners with overpronation. Though less cushioned, Brooks Adrenaline is a great all-around running shoe and is one of the most popular offered by Brooks.

Brooks Adrenaline GTS

The name speaks for itself. Brooks Adrenaline GTS, the Go-To Shoe from Brooks. Can there be any clearer message?

The Adrenaline line from Brooks produces all-around trainers that are suitable for every day running. Between Adrenaline and the Ghost, these are the two most requested running shoes.

Unlike other shoes that take pride in specializing in running types, the Adrenaline proudly stands out as a generic shoe that’s perfect for walking, jogging, and light running.

Cons

Brooks Beast - The Big Shoes

Apparently, Brooks does a good job of naming its products. The Beast is a quite literal name!

These shoes are massive, tough, sturdy, with a lot to offer. They’re also suitable for “big” guys who like to go run and conquer some terrain regularly.

Who Is It For?

Brooks Beast is rather more specialized. As we’ve said, it’s built with big guys in mind. It’s suitable for runners on the heavier side who need proper support for their knees. It works perfectly for walkers, as well.

Brooks Adrenaline vs. Beast - How Do They Compare?

Let’s see how these two compare in terms of design, fit, and cushioning.

Design

The Adrenaline encompasses two technologies that contribute to comfort. First is the DNA Loft, which is an additional cushioning foam layer towards the heels. It delivers a soft landing that’s suitable for rearfoot runners.

The other is the springy BioMoGo DNA that’s positioned towards the upper side of the midsole. It aims to give you lighter responsiveness, making it a Go-To-Shoe for all types of workouts.

However, Adrenaline GTS 20 isn’t “that” soft. Some of its previous models were softer with a more plush ride. Regarding the upper mesh, it’s thin and flexible, so it rolls easily and retains its shape.

The outsole has diagonal hash lines embedded in the rubber pattern. The deep grooves of the forefoot offer acceptable stability when bending.

Now off to The Beast, these trainers score highly on knee support. They’re made with heavy, injury-prone people in mind, and they don’t disappoint. Thanks to their GuideRails® Holistic Support System, the focus isn’t only on your feet, but it transcends to your knees as well.

Through this approach, Brooks Beast tries to stabilize your run without being overcorrecting or pressuring. Does it succeed in that? Well, that’s debatable.

Just like Adrenaline, the BioMoGo DNA technology is present here, where it amounts to better shock absorption and a plush feel, allowing you to wear these all day long.

The Beast’s upper unit is of an engineered mesh with a reinforced toe box that’ll withstand tough conditions.

There’s plenty of space there, so you’ll hardly feel them. Yet, they’re not the snug fit, either.

The Beast’s outsole is durable, yet it’s prone to getting dirty and attracting debris. This is due to the groovy pattern that includes big gaps that might trap debris and even tiny stones inside.

The result?

Adrenaline scores better in terms of comfort, while The Beast is more supportive.

Fit

There’s a world of difference between these shoes’ fits. Brooks Adrenaline offers a sleek, streamlined modern fit, where they enhanced their mesh upper in Adrenaline GTS 20 with their 3D Fit Print technology.

On the other hand, Brooks Beast is known to be one of the bulkiest trainers Brooks offers. In Beast 20, they tried to adjust the exaggerated bulky look people complained about before, while keeping the shoes comfortable and well-fitting. They feature an embroidered saddle, as well. Quite a design!

It’s a tie here. More of preference, we’d say. Are you looking for everyday shoes or special running shoes? Also, as we said before, consider your weight.

Cushioning

Designed to be an everyday shoe, Brooks Adrenaline is super comfortable. It sports a soft cushioning at the front and rear of its 12 mm midsole, so you’re covered here.

Cushioning was one of the flaws of previous versions of Brooks Beast, reviewers complained of how rough and stiff it was.

In 2019, The Beast went through a major redesign. It came out with a double-stacked well-cushioned midsole that appealed to buyers.

Besides, there’s a top layer cushioning made of polyurethane.

The point here undoubtedly goes to Adrenaline. While Beast has done some good work to improve its cushioning, its midsole is still too thick to be comfortable. We think it needs further improvement.

Verdict

These shoes appeal to different segments, I believe.

People who’re looking for regular trainers for everyday and occasional runs would go to Adrenaline. In contrast, those who are more experienced and are looking for more support might choose The Beast.

Brooks Adrenaline vs. Beast, which is the best? If we had to choose, we’d slightly lean towards Adrenaline. It scores highly on appearance, comfort, and proper fit. If anything, we think they should work on their rigid arch support.
