Back in 2018, Nate Wigdahl, a former Ironman who became an amputee, wanted to get back to running, so friends organized a 5K fundraiser to help him purchase a running blade—and the Omaha running community's support made it a huge success! Inspired by this experience and his passion for helping other amputees achieve their fitness goals, Nate and his supporters grew the event into an official 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2019, establishing a nomination process so proceeds could help other deserving amputees access the equipment insurance won't cover. Now the Blade 5K continues as both an in-person race in Omaha and a virtual event option, offering a 5K run and 1-mile walk for participants to support this meaningful cause.
